Aircraft cabin lab.

A multifunctional laboratory that replicates the visuals, acoustics and seat vibrations of flight, built on an Embraer ERJ 145 that flew millions of miles for British Airways and FlyBe before being decommissioned into Nottingham Trent University's engineering building in 2021.

A multifunctional research laboratory replicating the visuals, acoustics and seat vibrations of flight, built on an Embraer ERJ 145 airframe that flew for British Airways and FlyBe before decommissioning into the university's engineering building in 2021. Two years on the build, from first hands-on engineering project to operational research platform.

How

Off-the-shelf equipment integrated to an industrial standard: studio speakers and subwoofers actuate the cabin acoustics, bass shakers under the seats cover the 50 to 200 Hz vibration band, and exterior screens on a custom frame carry the visual channel. An acoustic model built in Ansys established the cabin's resonance behaviour. Three concurrent industry-grade systems were reduced to single-student operation through one USB dock and a rehearsed user manual.

Results

The lab ran perceived-comfort research on TurboProp aircraft under the EU Clean Sky 2 Comfdemo project. A follow-on summer research scholarship built its audio equalisation: signal characterisation at every seat, then a parametric equaliser in MATLAB, vectorised and CUDA-accelerated, cross-validated against recorded TurboProp noise.
