Laparoscopic surgery trainer.

Project manager on an eight-month, eight-person build of a next-generation trainer, in collaboration with an NHS Trust: a compliant robotic mechanism, designed and programmed to give surgeons realistic force feedback during practice.

A next-generation laparoscopic surgery trainer, developed over eight months in collaboration with an NHS Trust. A compliant robotic mechanism gives surgeons realistic force feedback at the tool. The architecture is modular, with interconnected modules simulating multiple incisions, built from off-the-shelf components for affordability, and VR-integrated to reproduce the stress environment of a live theatre.

How

An eight-person team, run as project manager: sub-grouped for accountability, on regular gateways with the collaborating Trust. The control system carried the hard engineering, precise tool control from a mechanism that must remain compliant. It was closed with a PID controller and servo angle control, with a softened tool point where the servo's driving torque sat above the displacement threshold. The CAD model was my individual technical contribution.

Results

A working demonstrator delivered at the end of the eight-month programme: modular, affordable and VR-integrated, aimed at the shortage of trained instructors and the absence of a standardised qualification route in laparoscopic training.
