MEng capstone · Award-winning · Scoped with Walkers

Industry 4.0 mobile manipulator.

An award-winning MEng capstone, designed in Fusion 360 and physically integrated: a Universal Robots UR-10 collaborative arm on an Omron LD250 autonomous mobile base, inside a custom frame enclosing the power systems and robot controller, with a SmartShift tool changer for swapping end effectors.

What

An Industry 4.0-ready mobile manipulator: a UR-10 collaborative arm on an Omron LD250 autonomous mobile base, unified in a custom frame that encloses power distribution and the robot controller, with a SmartShift tool changer for automated end-effector exchange. One platform, re-tooling itself across different duties on the same floor.

How

Requirements were scoped with a senior automation director in packaging at Walkers, against the live workflow of their Leicester crisp factory. Full mechanical design in Fusion 360, then physical integration of arm, base, frame, power systems and tool changer. Three duties set the specification:

a
Reloading seasoning onto the flavouring line
b
Palletising packed cases
c
Running a leak-detection effector over the oil fryers
Results

The system is novel and low-TRL, so it was not cleared for a live production line. Pick-and-place was validated on a conveyor rig, exercising the integrated arm, base and tool-change stack end to end, and the project took the capstone award.
